Feel The Love For All That Jazz
The Marshall Artists Series celebrates Black History Month with a special 100th birthday celebration of the late, great jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald.
Freda Payne, best known for her hit "Band of Gold," but who has also starred in four different Broadway shows — including "Jelly's Last Jam" and "Ain't Misbehaving" — brings alive the voice and vibe of Fitzgerald in her touring show.
At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center, Payne, a lifelong Fitzgerald fan, presents her “Tribute to Ella” show encompassing personal stories and some of Fitzgerald's most memorable songs, including “A-Tisket, a-Tasket,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing” and “Mack the Knife,” and, of course, her rendition of "Sweet Georgia Brown."
Tickets are $73.55/$62.85/$52.15/$43.59 to see the celebrated jazz singer who sang with the Duke Ellington big band as a young artist and who performed in recent years at the Montreux Jazz Festival in honor of Quincy Jones' 75th
birthday celebration. Get tickets at the Marshall Artists Series Box Office at 304-696-6656. Or order tickets online at Ticketmaster.com. You may also visit the box office located in the Joan C. Edwards Playhouse on the Marshall University campus. Box office hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Founded in 2008, Create Huntington has doled out more than $20,000 in mini grants to foster the people and a wide range of grassroots projects including chess tables in the park, the band Ona, Porch Unplugged, HMAF, Cinema Under the Stars, the Sustainability Fair, pop-up art shows and street music and much more.
Come out at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 to the V Club, 741 6th Ave., and show the love at the second annual Create Lovington, a music and fun-filled fundraiser to help re-fuel funds for its mini-grant program.
The fundraiser will feature live music from three Huntington-based, regionally-traveling eclectic live music acts - The Dividends, Short and Company, which is fresh back from playing at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn., and festival favorite DJ Charlie Brown Superstar. Live music will start at 10 p.m.
There will also be a photo booth, raffles and a $10 donation taken at the door to help fuel Create Huntington, a nonprofit organization that helps fund a multitude of projects, events, and people; all of which have the common
goal of making Huntington a better place.

My Roadtrip Pick: If you can't beat 'em, might as well join 'em. Since French Creek Freddie predicted six more weeks of winter, might as well have some winter sports fun. Head east high into the mountains of Canaan Valley, the highest valley east of the Mississippi River, where ski season is in full swing. The family-owned Timberline Four Seasons Resort has a big Valentine's weekend planned with dinner specials in the lodge, and live music by the Split String Soup Bluegrass Band. Enjoy skiing at Timberline as well as its neighboring resort, Canaan Resort, where you can also go ice skating, and snow tubing.
While in Canaan Valley, be sure to check out the winter splendor of Blackwater Falls, some live music at the Purple Fiddle and some WV made brews at Mountain State Brewery in Thomas and Blackwater Brewing and Stumptown Ales, both in Davis.
